IT is still a good career in 2026. But the version of IT that was a good career ten years ago is not the same version that is a good career today. AI has compressed the easy parts of the field, made the competitive parts more competitive, and raised the floor for what “qualified” means. The professionals thriving in IT right now are not the ones who know the most facts. They are the ones who can actually build, run, fix, and prove it.

The AI Reality: What Changed by Mid-2026

Entry-level and management roles are the most disrupted. AI tooling has automated a significant portion of the work that used to justify entry-level headcounts:

  • Tier 1 help desk is being replaced or reduced by AI-driven ticketing and self-service resolution. A company that needed 8 helpdesk technicians in 2022 may need 2 in 2026 — one to handle true edge cases and one to manage the AI tools doing the rest.
  • Junior network monitoring has been largely automated. AI-powered SIEM and NOC platforms flag, triage, and sometimes auto-remediate the alerts that entry-level analysts used to handle.
  • Middle management is being squeezed from both directions. AI gives senior engineers more individual leverage (one person doing the work of three), while leadership is scrutinizing management layers more aggressively. IT director headcounts are not growing.

This does not mean IT is dying. The field is absolutely growing. But the growth is concentrated in roles that require demonstrated, verifiable technical depth — not credentials that prove you once studied something.

What “Qualified” Means in 2026

In 2026, degrees and certifications are HR qualifying checkboxes, not differentiators. Every serious IT candidate has a CompTIA A+ or a relevant degree or some form of structured training. Hiring managers assume credentials. They do not get excited about them.

The Roles That Are Growing

Not all IT is under AI compression. These specializations are expanding:

  • Cloud engineering and architecture — someone has to design, build, and own the infrastructure AI tools run on.
  • Security operations — AI creates new attack surfaces and automates more attacks. Human defenders who understand adversarial thinking are still essential.
  • Platform and DevOps engineering — building the internal platforms that others build on requires depth AI cannot yet replace.
  • AI infrastructure / MLOps — a new category that is genuinely growing fast.
  • Industrial and OT IT — AI has not penetrated operational technology as deeply. Experienced OT/IT professionals are in very short supply.
  • Compliance-driven IT — HIPAA, FedRAMP, CMMC, PCI DSS compliance requires human judgment and documented accountability.

The Honest Salary Picture

First-year IT salaries for roles that AI has not compressed are holding or growing. Roles that AI has compressed are declining in headcount and seeing salary stagnation at the entry level.

So Is IT Still Worth It?

Yes, with clear eyes. The professionals who will build 20-year IT careers are the ones who:

  1. Treat the homelab as a continuous, documented practice environment — not a checkbox you ran once for a certification.
  2. Build a portfolio of public evidence: GitHub, a technical blog, network and architecture diagrams, incident postmortems.
  3. Embrace AI as a multiplier. The engineers who use AI tools well are not being replaced — they are doing the work of three people and getting paid accordingly.
  4. Pick a real specialization and go deep. Generalists who can recite everything but prove nothing are at exactly the level AI is most effective at commoditizing.
  5. Solve real problems in their homelab and document them as if they are writing a public knowledge base article.

The IT career that was a good career because “technology is growing” and “there are always jobs” is harder to coast into now. The IT career built on genuine skill, documented proof, and continuous learning is better than it has ever been.
